The current director of bands for Durango High School of Durango, Colorado is Alexander Finley. His responsibilities include management and instruction of the Durango High School Concert Band, Percussion Ensemble, Jazz Band, Marching Band, Pep Band, Group Piano, and Music Theory Class. His professional affiliations include Colorado Music Educators Association, Colorado Bandmasters Association, and National Association for Music Education.
After completing his student teaching at Freeport High School and Freeport Middle School, Mr. Finley graduated Summa Cum Laude with a degree in Music Education from Illinois State University in 2017 where he studied Tuba with Dr. Andrew Rummel, and Music Education Pedagogy and conducting with Dr. Joseph Manfedo. During his tenure at ISU, he played with the Tuba Euphonium Studio, Symphonic Band, Symphonic Winds, and Wind Ensemble where he was involved in the professional recording of Thomas Trachsel’s Symphony no. 3. Mr. Finley also participated in the school’s marching band, titled the Big Red Marching Machine for all four years while in school, holding section leader and drum major positions. During his time at ISU he was involved in numerous tours across the state of Illinois with the tuba-euphonium studio and wind ensemble. He also participated as a member of the Big Red Marching Machine as the exhibition band for the Bands of America Grand National Marching Band Festival in 2015, where he also conducted the Big Red Brass Ensemble in the playing of the National Anthem to begin the festivities. Mr. Finley began his music education career as combined staff at Ignacio Middle and Ignacio High School where he was Director of Musical Activities, conducting Concert Band, and Choir for both schools.
The DHS marching band has had five consecutive appearances at the Colorado Band Masters State Marching Band Competition, and the concert band has earned seven consecutive “Superior I” ratings at Colorado High School Activities Association competition. Recently, the DHS Concert Band qualified and performed at the CBA State Concert Band Festival for the first time in Durango history, placing them as one of the top 25 Concert Bands in the state. The DHS Band has traveled to San Antonio, Texas to perform at the halftime of The 2015 Valero Alamo Bowl.
